The Village’s water treatment plant and distribution system provides over 3,000 Glencoe households, businesses and public entities with filtered water on a daily basis. As the Water Plant nears 100 years old (it will reach this milestone in 2028), and the Village faces required near-term investments in the current facility. While planning for those investments, the Village is also weighing possible partnerships that could impact long-term options. The Village recently look the opportunity to again discuss the possible paths the Village could take in the coming years.
The Village recently hosted a public meeting on Saturday, April 20, 2024 to discuss with the Village Board Members our options moving forward regarding water production. The public meeting provided a high-level overview of our water system, the challenges that climate change and regulations bring, and the three broad options for our future. The ultimate purpose of this workshop was to inform the Village Board of what our water supply options may be, how we’ve looked for those answers in the past, and why the conversation is particularly important at this time. It was also the start of a longer community conversation about possible paths forward, accommodating the necessary time to thoughtfully consider these options. A copy of the presentation can be found here. A recording of the meeting is available on the Village’s Youtube (part 1 & part 2).
The Village of Glencoe pulls water from Lake Michigan. About 56% of Illinois population receives its water from Lake Michigan, and that number may continue to grow as conservation and efficiency efforts over the last 30 years have helped decrease our overall water usage in the region. Investments in our water distribution infrastructure, as well as more efficient appliances and modern plumbing has shown a steady decline in water usage throughout the region.
As Glencoe is a community that uniquely serves itself, we are responsible with continuing to fund our water production operations or seek a partnership in the region. The public meeting focused on the opportunities and challenges ahead, and separated them out into three main categories:
- Invest in our Water Treatment Plant
- Relocate/Rebuild our Water Treatment Plant
- Seeking Water Partnerships
The Village will continue to evaluate these options as we plan out a realistic 10-year Community Investment Program for the water plant. Village staff will be ready to respond to different scenarios to ensure we maintain financial responsibility while upholding the integrity of our water system. Keeping ourselves agile to respond to the opportunities and hurdles that may arise, we want to ensure our community and it’s leaders that we are moving in the right direction. The same is true of the water distribution system. Thanks to new State mandates and accelerating costs, the replacements of important water main and service lines which the Village accelerated in 2017 and continues to regularly invest in will require considerate thinking and action to ensure the path forward continues to be meaningful and effective.
