Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): Smart Water Meter Portal

What is a smart water meter?
A smart water meter is a device that measures the amount of water that is used by a property and uses wireless technology to communicate usage information to the Village and to an online portal for customers.
How will customers benefit from a smart water meter and online portal?
Water usage information is accessible to customers through an online portal and is used by the Village to generate utility bills, manage water production, and provide a higher level of service to water customers experiencing a water related issue in their home or business. The remote technology allows this information to be transmitted via a fixed radio network.  Because smart meters do not require manual meter reads, they offer several additional benefits such as reduced transport, fuel, labor costs and decreased carbon emissions.

The portal provides access to water usage, giving customers:

  • better control over water use and resulting bills;
  • ensuring fair and accurate water billing;
  • assistance in identifying and repairing water leaks.
How can I view my water usage on the portal?
There are multiple ways to see usage through the Village’s online portal. The portal provides usage information in a graphical or downloadable excel format in daily, hourly or monthly increments. Users can also define a customized time period to view usage information.

Where do I go to enroll in the smart meter portal?
Sign-in or sign-up for an online account. Please visit the following link to enroll: https://www.municipalonlinepayments.com/glencoeil and click on "Sign In/Register" in the top right hand corner. You will need your utility account number and last payment amount to create an account. Please note, if you register for an online account, your last bill payment amount will only be needed once for your initial log-in as a security feature. Once you have created an account and log-in, you can select Utility Billing from the main menu and click on the "Consumption" menu on the left hand side to view your water usage. You may also sign up for usage and bill alerts in the "Contact Preferences" menu by clicking on the "Manage Alerts" tab.

Please note, if you are new to Glencoe, usage will not appear on your online account until after your first bill is posted.
How many times a day does my smart meter transmit information to the Village?
The smart meter transmits water consumption data four times a day in hourly increments.
Is there a way to be notified of water usage changes at a particular time, like a spike in usage?
Yes, the new portal will allow customers to set parameters to be notified via email, text message or phone call for varying levels of usage.  This may help quickly identify sharp increases in usage, that can be caused by increases in irrigation, filling a pool or a leaky plumbing fixture. This can be managed from the Contact Preferences Menu in the Manage Alerts Tab.
