June 19, 2022 Declared Juneteenth in the Village of Glencoe

On June 19, 1865, the freedom of all people was announced when Major General Gordon Granger read General Order Number 3 in Galveston, Texas, nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued and nearly six months after the 13th Amendment was passed by both houses of Congress. This momentous day is remembered as “Juneteenth,” honoring that declaration of emancipation and is today marked by celebrations, reflection and rejoicing.

The Village of Glencoe is proud to join cities and states across the country in celebrating Juneteenth, honoring Black history, art and culture, and heritage in our community. At the June Village Board Meeting, June 19 was officially declared Juneteenth in the Village of Glencoe. The Village continues its commitment to growing as a welcoming and inclusive community in which all are valued, respected and welcomed.
