What the job is: The Mechanic supports Public Works Department operations by performing semi-skilled, skilled and administrative work in maintaining the Village’s fleet of vehicles and equipment, including performing scheduled preventative maintenance and emergency repairs on light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles and construction equipment. The Mechanic supports the Public Works Department’s emergency operations by performing vehicle and equipment maintenance during emergency events, such as weather events or other emergencies. The Mechanic provides internal customer service to Village staff by interacting with vehicle operators in all departments. The Public Works Department provides 24/7 services to the community – Mechanics respond to after-hours emergency service requests, weather events and snow/ice control operations.

The Village maintains a diverse fleet of sedans, squad cars, light-duty and heavy-duty trucks (both gas and diesel), heavy/construction equipment, fire department apparatus and ambulances. The Village requires consistent, reliable vehicles to provide routine and emergency services to the community (including police, fire and emergency medical services), so a commitment to completing efficient, high-quality vehicle maintenance and repair work to ensure the Village maximizes its vehicle uptime across the fleet is a must. The Village’s Mechanics perform vehicle repairs for the Village and other units of government in the Village, so strong customer service skills are a must.

Mechanics are included in a collective bargaining unit represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO.

Mechanics play a vital role in the Village’s fleet maintenance – a person with strong, versatile technical skills who shares our values for exceptional customer service will be the best fit for this position. Experience with a variety of light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles (gas and diesel), emergency vehicles (police and fire apparatus) and heavy equipment is highly desirable.

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience 

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus technical training in automotive maintenance, maintenance management or related field
  • One to three years of related work experience, preferably with both light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment
  • Class A or B commercial driver’s license with air brakes endorsement (must be obtained within six months of hire

Interpersonal and Communication

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Strong team player and communicator

Functional Knowledge

  • Thorough knowledge of automotive repair processes, techniques, tools and equipment for light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment (both gas and diesel), emergency vehicle repair, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators and welding
  • Knowledge of automotive diagnostic tools and techniques
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to complete worksheets and reports

Work Environment 

  • Work is primarily performed in a shop/garage environment, with periodic work outdoors at job sites in all weather conditions, including severe weather during emergencies; operates vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Will be assigned to a rotating on-call schedule for 24/7 after-hours emergencies, including evenings, weekends and holidays
  • During emergency call-back events, will be required to work outside of normal scheduled hours, such as placement on a 12-hour shift (and occasionally up to a 16-hour shift), which may be during the daytime, evening, overnight, weekends and/or holidays
  • Strong emphasis on workplace safety

Physical Requirements (With or Without a Reasonable Accommodation)

  • Lifting, pulling and pushing up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally
  • Frequent walking and standing (sometimes on uneven surfaces), talking, listening, and operating computer
  • Walking, grasping, lifting and carrying objects; reaching, operating hand controls and small tools, operating foot controls (such as driving)

 SALARY:  The base salary is $73,781 to $76,340 (excluding merit pay), and the Village offers an excellent comprehensive fringe benefits package, including health, dental and life insurance, IMRF pension and more.
