The Village is excited to be joining a growing local effort to encourage residents to register for Smart911. This new system has dual purpose: first, it allows you to create a Safety Profile which provides important information to first responders in emergencies, and second, it will replace Glencoe CONNECT as the Village’s emergency alert and service update notification system.
What is a Smart911 Safety Profile? Smart 911 is a free, opt-in service in which you create a Safety Profile. Your Smart911 Safety Profile can include as much or as little information that you want 911 and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. When anyone in your household dials 911 from a phone associated with their Safety Profile, their profile is immediately displayed to the emergency dispatcher. Your Safety Profile is secure and confidential, and is only used by emergency responders. All residents are encouraged to create a Safety Profile. Accounts will not be transferred from Glencoe CONNECT automatically and use of Glencoe CONNECT will end early this summer.
Some of the information that could be life-saving includes:
- Home and work addresses (which mobile phones do not currently provide to a 911 dispatcher)
- People living in your household
- Pets, service animals
- Medications and medical equipment
- Medical conditions and allergies
- Property details, layout and utility information
- Vehicle descriptions
- Phone numbers associated with your family
- Emergency contacts
To ensure that your data is accurate in the case of an emergency, the Smart911 system requires users to keep their Safety Profiles active by reviewing information every six months. As the Village first implemented Smart911 in the summer of 2019, early 2020 is the first time Smart911 is sending validation e-mails. Emergency Alerts and Village Service Notifications
Can I register for Glencoe-specific alerts and notifications through Smart911? Yes - the Village has access to a secondary system which uses your Smart911 Safety Profile contact information to send you local alerts and service updates. In your Safety Profile, you can choose to receive the notifications via phone call, text, e-mail or through the mobile app. When using the app, the system provides you real-time information based on your location. In addition to Glencoe-specific alerts, the system allows you to opt-in to notifications from other local public safety agencies and the National Weather Service based on your location.
