Glencoe's 150th Celebration Begins with Light the Lights - November 23

By Village Manager Phil Kiraly

As I prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving this year with my family, I am also eager for another special event: the beginning of Glencoe’s year-long 150th Phil_Kiralyanniversary celebration! After over eighteen months of extensive planning, community engagement and dedication, the year-long celebration kick-off will come to light (literally!) at the Village’s annual Light the Lights ceremony on Friday, November 23 from 4-7 p.m. in downtown. With less than two weeks until the event, I am pleased to invite you and your loved ones to Shop, Dine, Stroll and to enjoy all of the new holiday attractions, made possible by event sponsor, BMO Harris Bank!

New this year, the event will kick-off at 4 p.m. with a “Wine and Beer Stroll” (buy your tickets in advance here). Pick up our official Light the Lights cup at BMO Harris Bank and take your favorite wine or beer (or soda for the kids) with you while also enjoying special shopping deals, a trip to one of our downtown art galleries, grilling at The Grand Food Center, caroling and trackless train rides through our beautiful downtown. Sticking with tradition, the lighting ceremony will take place at the corner of Park and Vernon avenues at 5:15 p.m., but this year’s ceremony will be extra special as we light a new live holiday tree, donated by Chalet Nursery. After the lighting ceremony, follow Santa to our Winter Village at Wyman Green for a photo and to meet his reindeer. The fun will continue throughout downtown until 7 p.m.!

While the trackless train rides are free, we encourage attendees to bring one box/can of a non-perishable food item as their “train fare,” in support of the Glencoe Community Holiday Drive efforts starting that evening as well. Holiday Drive volunteers will be present at 337 Park Avenue (the former Chalk Boutique location) to collect donations and will be passing out special “Glencoe 150” cookies at The Grand Food Center.

An event as unique as this would not be possible without our sponsors. We are grateful to the Light the Lights sponsor BMO Harris Bank, our holiday tree sponsor Chalet Nursery, as well as our Winter Village sponsor @properties. The Wine and Beer Stroll is possible due to the generous in-kind donations of Joseph Mullarky Distributors and OneHope Wine. Thank you to all who have contributed to the biggest celebration of holidays in Glencoe yet!

As the countdown to the Sesquicentennial year continues, I encourage you to learn more about other upcoming Sesquicentennial events taking place during the rest of the year and throughout 2019. To help spread the word of all the ways to celebrate, you’ll soon receive a community calendar for 2019 in your mailbox, which was made possible by Coldwell Banker. And if you haven’t done so already, please visit the Glencoe 150 website at www.glencoe150.org for event information and ways that you and your family can show your Glencoe pride.

My family and I look forward to seeing you at Light the Lights!
