Somehow we’re already in August, and school is resuming in just a few short weeks, but that doesn’t mean the fun is over here in Glencoe! Check out these special events around the community to make the most out of your final days of summer:

  • Friday, August 4: Movies on the Green – Lego Batman
Movies begin at Dusk, Wyman Green, Free
Grab your blankets and lawn chairs for the final Movies on the Green of the summer – Lego Batman (PG). Don’t forget that you can pick up some snacks from Glencoe Youth Services at the event! Rain location is Council Chamber in Village Hall.

  • Saturday, August 5: Monarch Mania with FGBT
9 a.m.-Noon, Intersection of Green Bay Trail and Mary Street
Join the Friends of the Green Bay Trail at their Hatchery. Feed the caterpillars that will eventually hatch into beautiful butterflies that are released to the trail. Rain date is Saturday, August 12.

  • Wednesday, August 9: TREVOR the musical at Writers Theatre
7:30 p.m., Writers Theatre (Shows continue through September 17)
Seats are filling up fast for the opening night of TREVOR the musical at Writers Theatre. Based on the story that inspired the Academy Award-winning film, the charity and the national movement, TREVOR the musical is a coming-of-age story: “Meet Trevor, a 13-year-old boy in 1981 whose vibrant imagination drives a turbulent journey of self-discovery. As he deals with adolescence and all that goes with it, Trevor begins to explore what it means to be himself, influenced by his friends, parents and his musical idol.” Learn more about the Trevor Project at www.thetrevorproject.org.

  • Saturday, August 19 and Sunday, August 20: Malott Japanese Garden Summer Festival
    10 a.m.-2 p.m., Chicago Botanic Garden
Stop by the Chicago Botanic Garden to learn about the summer festivals (matsuri) celebrated in Japan during this special weekend of activities. Listen to taiko drum and koto harp music, enjoy traditional folktales, and watch a tea ceremony. Kids of all ages can make projects to celebrate summer — make fish prints (gyotaku), create a paper fan (uchiwa), design a kite and more at family-friendly, hands-on stations.
  • Wednesday, August 16: Coffee with the Board
    3-5 p.m., Glencoe Roast (700 Vernon Avenue)
The Village Board wants to hear about what local issues are most important to you. Enjoy a cup of coffee and meet with members of the Board to learn about current Village initiatives, such as changes to the Garbage Collection Program, and to discuss ways the Village can better serve our community. No RSVP necessary – stop by anytime that you can!

  • Saturday, August 26: End of Summer Fire Party
    7-9 p.m., Glencoe Beach
Join the Glencoe Park District at Glencoe Beach for a fire dancing show, s’mores and glow-in-the-dark fun! Children must be accompanied by an adult. Registration required.

  • Saturdays: Glencoe French Market
    8 a.m.-1 p.m., Wyman Green
Last but not least, don’t forget that the Glencoe French Market is open every Saturday through early fall. Stop by for your weekly filling of fresh, in-season fruits, veggies, produce and artisan goods.

Do you have an upcoming event that you’d like us to feature in the next Explore, Enjoy & Celebrate Glencoe? Submit details to info@villageofglencoe.org. Inclusion is at the sole discretion of the Village and priority will be given to events that are open to the entire community and that are free or have nominal fees to participate.
