Celebrate the Glencoe 150 Finale at Light the Lights

By Village Manager Phil Kiraly

In looking back on 2019 and the Village of Glencoe’s Sesquicentennial year, I have a hard time imagining how any more excitement and community pride could have been packed into Kiraly family blog image 12 short months. With the Sesquicentennial Planning Committee at the helm, and in partnership with Glencoe’s many community organizations, community members of all ages and interests were invited to partake in the Sesquicentennial in fun and unique ways. Personally, as I look back on the year, I’ll always think of flipping the holiday light switch at Light the Lights last November with my daughter Eleanor, humming the melodies from I Love This Town: A Musical Salute to Glencoe (much to the chagrin of my staff) and of getting dunked at the Fourth of July Party in the Park (much to the amusement of my staff). Whatever event or activity from the year-long celebration stood out most to you, I hope that you too will look back on 2019 fondly for years to come. A big thank you to all those who helped make the celebration possible—it would not have been nearly as successful without the enthusiasm and support of the volunteers, community organizations and businesses that gave their time and talents to the year!

Of course, no good celebration would be complete without a big finale – a true community celebration for all to enjoy, which is why I am excited once again to be working the Glencoe Chamber of Commerce to bring you another line-up of special attractions at Light the Lights from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, November 29. Made possible through the generous support of BMO Harris Bank Glencoe and @properties, and in partnership with over 30 of Glencoe’s local businesses, you and your family are invited to enjoy the Village’s annual tree lighting ceremony, shopping specials (check those out here), a Wine and Beer Stroll, a visit from Santa and his reindeer, trackless train rides and more! View the full event schedule here >>

New this year, you can skip the lines at the event by pre-ordering your Wine and Beer Stroll cups before Friday, November 22 (do that here). Pre-ordered cups can be picked up in advance of the event from Monday, November 25-Wednesday, November 27 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. or anytime during Light the Lights at Village Hall. And yes, like last year, the first 300 cups purchased for the Juice and Soda only option will be commemorative LED lightbulbs in honor of the event (thanks to Hometown Coffee & Juice for making this possible).

Light the Lights and Small Business Saturday are a great reminder that as you’re planning your holiday shopping, we hope you think of shopping in Glencoe first! Shopping local not only helps our business districts continue to thrive but also helps support Village services.

As the Sesquicentennial draws to a close, the Sesquicentennial Planning Committee hopes that you look back on 2019 with nothing but wonderful memories and that you enter 2020 with a renewed sense of pride in Our Town Glencoe! My family and I look forward to seeing you at Light the Lights!
