The Village maintains a network of 110 miles of storm and sanitary sewer piping. The sanitary sewer system collects waste from home sources which includes sinks, toilets, showers and washing machines. Typically basement floor drains are also connected to the sanitary system. Sanitary waste is carried through the Village’s system and delivered to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District for treatment. The storm sewer system collects rain water runoff from streets and allows for a connection from homes for gutters/downspouts, sump pumps and yard drainage systems. Water collected in the storm sewer system is discharged to various natural drainage areas.
If you experience a back-up in your home please contact the Public Works Department so we may assess the situation before you call in a private contractor. Village personnel are on-call 24 hours a day and will check Village systems to assure there is no Village problem causing the back-up and will assist residents in working to a solution of the back-up.
If you have experienced sewer backups in the past there are some measures you can take to reduce your exposure:
- Install battery back-up sump pumps or an alternate power supply.
- Install sanitary back water systems on your gravity sanitary sewer services.
- Install stand pipes or caps on problematic floor drains.
- Clear window well drains of debris, or consider covers.
- Make sure downspouts carry water away from your house; re-grade as needed.
- Perform annual inspections on your storm and sanitary sewer systems to assure their integrity.
Contact the Public Works Department at 835-4111 to report any problems with the Village or private sewer issues or feel free to email Public Works Supervisor billk@villageofglencoe.org.
